Vomiting/Vómitos - Premier Pediatric Urgent Care Provider in Texas - Little Spurs Pediatric Urgent Care

What is it?

It is when stomach contents come up into, and are ejected beyond the mouth. In children, the most common cause are viruses.

What are the symptoms?

Your child may have viral symptoms such as fever, nausea, poor appetite, decreased activity, fatigue, abdominal pain or cramps.

How do I treat it?

Mild vomiting, meaning your child vomits 2-3 times a day, can usually be treated at home. The best approach is to give small amounts (5-15 mL) of fluid every 10-15 minute. You can use Pedialyte for babies and infants. You can use Gatorade or Powerade for older children. It is important not to force your child to eat but encourage them to drink fluids so they do not become dehydrated. It is also important to advance to regular diet as soon as your child is feeling better (No candies or junk foods kids…sorry!).

What do I look out for?

Please visit your medical provider, local urgent care or emergency department if your child is having fever for more than 3-4 days, fever over 105F (40.5C), repeated or worsening vomiting, vomit appears green (bile), dehydration, severe abdominal pain, or any other concerns you may have. At Little Spurs Pediatric Urgent Care, we are here to help!
