Halloween is full of fun costumes, trick-or-treating, and plenty of sweet treats! While candy is an exciting part of the holiday for many children, it’s important for parents to keep safety in mind when sorting through and enjoying Halloween goodies. From choking hazards to candy wrappers, a few simple precautions can help your family enjoy a safer Halloween.
Be Mindful of Choking Hazards: Hard candies, such as Dum-Dums and Jolly Ranchers, can pose a choking risk for young children. Chewy or sticky treats, including gum and marshmallows, can also be difficult to manage. Always consider your child’s age and chewing abilities when choosing treats, and avoid giving young children foods that may pose a choking hazard.
Check Candy Wrappers and Sticks: Candy wrappers, lollipop sticks, and other packaging are not meant to be eaten and can pose risks if swallowed. Before letting your child enjoy their treats, remove wrappers and sticks when appropriate and make sure candy is being eaten safely.
Choose Age-Appropriate Treats: Some candies may be easier to chew than others, but no candy is completely risk-free. For children who are old enough to eat them safely, softer chocolate treats may be easier to manage than hard candies. For younger children, consider age-appropriate snack alternatives, such as soft foods prepared in a safe size and texture for their developmental stage.
Encourage Safe Eating Habits: Teach children to sit down while eating candy and avoid running, playing, laughing, or talking with food in their mouths. These simple habits can help reduce the risk of choking during Halloween celebrations.
Supervise Children While They Eat: Keep young children within sight while they enjoy their treats, and check their candy before they eat it. Remember that children develop chewing and swallowing skills at different rates, so choose treats based on your child’s individual abilities, not just their age.
Know What to Do in an Emergency: Choking can happen quickly. Learn the signs of choking and age-appropriate first aid before Halloween arrives. If a child cannot breathe, cough, cry, or speak, call 911 and begin appropriate choking first aid if you are trained to do so.
With a little preparation and supervision, your family can enjoy Halloween treats while keeping safety a priority. Take time to check your child’s candy, choose appropriate snacks, and encourage safe eating habits so the holiday can be filled with more treats and fewer worries!
