Your child has just brought home the letter parents dread to receive: head lice is in their classroom. Finding out your child has head lice can feel overwhelming, but with the right tools and steps, you can tackle the problem quickly and effectively. Head lice are tiny gray bugs that live in hair and bite the scalp. Their eggs, called nits, attach tightly to hair strands and can’t be shaken off like dandruff. Though lice are common and not a sign of poor hygiene, they are contagious and need to be treated promptly.
Step 1: Use an Anti-Lice Shampoo or Treatment
Start with an over-the-counter anti-lice shampoo or rinse, like Nix, Rid, or a prescription option recommended by your pediatrician. Most treatments work best on dry hair. Apply about 2 ounces, massage into the scalp, and lather with a bit of warm water. Scrub thoroughly for 10 minutes, rinse well, and towel dry. These shampoos kill both lice and most nits. Repeat the treatment in 9 days to eliminate any newly hatched lice.
Step 2: Remove the Nits (Optional but Helpful)
While removing dead nits isn’t required, doing so helps prevent confusion and rechecks at school. Use a fine-tooth nit comb on wet hair or remove them by hand. Avoid using additional “nit-loosening” products, as they can interfere with how the anti-lice shampoo works.
Step 3: Treat the Home Environment
Lice can’t live off the scalp for more than 24 hours, but nits can survive up to 2 weeks. Wash bedding, clothes, and towels in hot water. Soak combs and brushes in lice treatment solution for an hour. For items that can’t be washed, such as hats, coats, or stuffed animals, seal them in a plastic bag for 14 days. This suffocates and kills any remaining lice or prevents nits from hatching, as they can’t survive without the warmth and humidity of the scalp.
Step 4: Check and Treat Close Contacts
Examine everyone in the household. If lice or nits are present, or symptoms like scalp itching develop, treat them as well. Bedmates should always be treated, even if they’re not showing signs yet.
With patience and the right approach, you can clear lice from your home and help your child get back to normal quickly. If you’re unsure at any point, reach out to Little Spurs Pediatric Urgent Care for help! Find a location near you today.
