Keeping Kids Safe on the Playground

Keeping Kids Safe on the Playground - Premier Pediatric Urgent Care Provider in Texas - Little Spurs Pediatric Urgent Care

Spring is here, and kids are eager to get outside! Warmer weather comes more activity, and unfortunately, more injuries. According to the American Medical Association, falls are the leading cause of nonfatal injuries for children in the U.S., sending nearly 2.8 million kids to emergency departments each year. Falls on playgrounds, trampolines, and bikes often result in fractures, sprains, and head injuries.

How to Play Safely

  • Supervise play. Kids love testing limits! This includes jumping off high spots or going the wrong way up slides. Being nearby helps prevent injuries before they happen!

  • Choose age-appropriate equipment. Playground signs usually list suggested ages. A good rule: if your child can’t get on or off safely by themselves, the equipment is too advanced. Here’s a guide to what’s safe for each age group, plus things to watch out for:

    • Toddlers: Keep it low and simple. Look for climbing structures under 32 inches, small slides, ramps, bucket-seat swings, and spring rockers. Avoid tall slides or equipment they can’t easily climb down.

    • Preschoolers: Kids aged 3–5 can handle a bit more challenge. Horizontal ladders (monkey bars) under 60 inches, small slides, ramps, step ladders, swings (belt, bucket, or tire), and spiral slides up to 360° are good options. Steer clear of equipment that requires complex climbing skills or is too high for them.

    • Grade-schoolers: Older kids love more adventurous play. Arch climbers, chain walks, free-standing climbers, ladders, ramps, overhead rings, and swings (belt or tire) are great—but skip bucket-seat swings. Make sure they can safely navigate the equipment and understand playground rules.

By matching your child to the right equipment, you can help them explore, climb, and swing confidently, while keeping scrapes and falls to a minimum.

What to Do After an Injury

Seek emergency care immediately if your child has a bone visible through the skin, can’t move fingers or toes, has severe, unmanageable pain, has uncontrolled bleeding. Call 911 if your child is unresponsive or having trouble breathing.
