What’s Normal for Baby Breathing? When to Worry and When to Seek Care

What’s Normal for Baby Breathing? When to Worry and When to Seek Care - Premier Pediatric Urgent Care Provider in Texas - Little Spurs Pediatric Urgent Care

What’s Normal for Baby Breathing

In the first year of life, irregular breathing is part of development. Here’s what’s common in infants:

  • Breathing 40 to 60 times per minute while awake
  • Slower breathing during sleep
  • Short pauses in breathing (up to 10 seconds), followed by brief rapid breaths
  • Noisy breathing, especially in the first few weeks

Newborn lungs and airways are still maturing, so these patterns often improve with time.

Typical Noises You May Hear

It’s common for babies to be loud breathers. These sounds might seem concerning, but they are often harmless:

  • Snorting or congested breathing, especially after birth
  • Squeaking or whistling noises
  • Grunting during sleep or while having a bowel movement
  • Coarse breathing sounds due to small airways

Most of these noises will fade as your baby grows.

When to Visit Pediatric Urgent Care

Some breathing changes can indicate a problem. Visit Little Spurs if your baby:

  • Has consistently rapid breathing, not just occasional bursts
  • Is pulling in around the ribs or neck with each breath
  • Has flaring nostrils when breathing
  • Grunts with every breath
  • Is overly sleepy or refuses to feed
  • Is under 6 weeks old and you are concerned about their breathing
