A Parent’s Guide to the MMR Vaccine - Premier Pediatric Urgent Care Provider in Texas - Little Spurs Pediatric Urgent Care

The Texas Department of State Health Services recently reported an outbreak of measles in the South Plains region of Texas, with 505 confirmed cases as of April 8, 2025Vaccination remains one of the best ways to protect your child from diseases like measles. The MMR vaccine (Measles, Mumps, Rubella), which protects against these three illnesses, plays a crucial role in preventing their spread. As a parent, it’s normal to have questions about the safety and importance of vaccinations given to children. Our urgent care pediatrics team is here to help answer some of the main questions parents have about this vaccine:

What is the MMR vaccine?

The MMR vaccine is a combined vaccine that protects against three highly contagious diseases: measles, mumps, and rubella. These diseases can cause serious health issues in children, including brain damage, hearing loss, and in some cases can lead to death. For pregnant women, it can lead to hearing loss and birth defects for children in the womb.

When Do We Get the Vaccine?

The vaccine is typically administered in two doses:

  • First Dose: Given at 12 to 15 months of age.
  • Second Dose: Given at 4 to 6 years of age, typically before starting kindergarten.

Once your child has received both doses of the MMR vaccine, they are generally protected for life. Additional booster shots are not usually needed, as the vaccine provides long-lasting immunity against measles, mumps, and rubella. However, it’s important to stay up-to-date with regular checkups and follow any guidance from your child’s healthcare provider.

Why is the MMR vaccine important for my child?

The MMR vaccine is essential because it provides long-lasting immunity against three dangerous diseases. Measles, mumps, and rubella can lead to severe complications. By ensuring your child gets the MMR vaccine, you are not only protecting their health but also contributing to the health of the community by preventing the spread of these contagious diseases.
