Tummy Ache or Something More?
“My tummy hurts!” It’s a phrase every parent hears at some point, but when is it a simple complaint and when is it something more? For younger kids, tummy aches can come from all sorts of causes: constipation, diarrhea, gas, or nausea. While most go away on their own, some symptoms might signal that it’s time to seek medical care!
When to See a Doctor?
Bring your child to Little Spurs Pediatric Urgent Care if they experience any of the following:
• Stomach pain lasting longer than one day
• Repeated vomiting or diarrhea accompanied by signs of dehydration (dry mouth, decreased urination, lethargy)
• No bowel movement for several days
• Blood in stool or vomit
• Complaints of pain during bathroom visits
• Extreme tiredness or a fever that won’t go away
Our pediatric providers offer quick, gentle assessments to help you understand what’s going on and provide the care your toddler needs.
Parent Update: Cyclospora Cases Are Increasing in Texas
While most tummy aches and diarrhea in children are caused by common viruses that improve within a few days, Texas has recently seen an increase in illnesses caused by Cyclospora, a microscopic parasite. Unlike a typical stomach virus, Cyclospora often causes watery diarrhea that lasts longer than a week or improves before returning. If your child’s diarrhea persists for more than 7 days, comes back after seeming to improve, or is accompanied by signs of dehydration, it’s important to have them evaluated by a healthcare provider. Most children recover well with proper treatment, but recognizing the symptoms early can help prevent complications.
When to Visit Little Spurs Pediatric Urgent Care
If your child has diarrhea that lasts longer than a week, symptoms that keep coming back, or signs of dehydration, it’s time to be evaluated.
At Little Spurs Pediatric Urgent Care, our providers can assess your child’s symptoms, recommend the appropriate testing when needed, and develop the right treatment plan so your child can start feeling better as quickly as possible. Save your spot in line by visiting us online today.
