Did you know? According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, an estimated 10,200 firework-related injuries were treated in emergency departments in 2022. Nearly three-quarters of those injuries occurred in the weeks surrounding July 4th, and children ages 5 to 14 remain one of the highest-risk groups. Each year, thousands of kids end up needing childrens urgent care for firework injuries.
If you’re planning to light fireworks at home this Independence Day, follow these key safety guidelines to help protect your children—and yourself:
1. Supervise and Plan Ahead
-
Always have an adult present when lighting fireworks.
-
Designate a “safe zone” away from houses, dry grass, or flammable materials.
-
Some cities offer designated firework areas, use these if available.
2. Set Up a Safe Display
-
Never light fireworks indoors.
-
Keep buckets of water or a hose nearby in case of fire or for soaking used fireworks.
-
Assign a responsible adult as the “shooter” and keep children far from the launch area.
3. Use the Right Gear
-
Anyone near fireworks should avoid loose-fitting clothes.
-
Wear eye protection, long sleeves, and gloves when handling fireworks.
4. Avoid Dangerous Practices
-
Never relight a “dud.” Wait 20 minutes, then soak it with water.
-
Don’t lean over fireworks when lighting them.
-
Never hold a firework in your hand or point it at people, animals, or buildings.
-
Avoid placing fireworks in glass or metal containers, which can shatter and cause injury.
5. Be Extra Cautious with Sparklers
Sparklers may seem harmless, but they burn at 1,200°F—hot enough to melt glass.
-
Never give sparklers to small children.
-
Always supervise older children closely when using them.
6. Fireworks and Storage Safety
-
Never store fireworks in pockets, homes, or near heat sources.
-
Do not allow children to pick up or play with used fireworks—they may still be active.
What To Do If a Burn Occurs
In the event of a firework-related burn:
-
Apply a cool, moist cloth—but never use ice.
-
Use antibiotic ointment and wrap the area loosely.
-
Seek care immediately at an urgent care center or emergency room.
