Halloween Safety Tips 2022
Happy Halloween! This fun, spooooooky time of year consists of many fun activities, but there are also a few things to keep in mind when it comes to safety!
Trick-or-Treating:
- Accompany young children in the neighborhood and identify your surroundings.
- Create a route prior to trick-or-treating
- Teach your children to look both ways before crossing the street.
- Children should be supervised by an adult when crossing the street
- Only approach homes that have a porch light on.
- Never enter a stranger’s home or a vehicle for any treats.
- Stay on sidewalks.
Costumes:
- Comfortable shoes for walking. Supportive and clear of tripping hazards such as strings, bells, etc.
- Put reflective tape on costumes, or have your child wear glow sticks!
- If wearing a wig, ensure it is fire-resistant.
Candy:
- Inspect candy before eating
- Make sure wrappers have not been tampered with
- Choking hazard candies for children under age 4
- Round candies like M&M’s and Skittles
- Hard candies like Warheads
- Extremely sticky candy like caramels and gum
- Allergies
- Weed out any candy that your child is allergic to (nuts, gluten, red dye 40)
- Be aware of dangerous drugs that can be seen as candy, such as fentanyl.
Tips For Your Home:
- If you are handing out candy: keep your porch/driveway lit!
- Identify any tripping hazards and remove them from the sidewalk/yard.
- Non-edible options for trick-or-treaters include items such as stickers, bouncy balls, and glow sticks!
- Try to hand out candy without nuts (just in case!)
Have a safe and happy Halloween!
