The MMR vaccine shields against Measles, Mumps, and Rubella. Recently, mumps symptoms cases have surfaced in Dallas, with measles and rubella also reported in various Texas counties, including San Antonio schools. Let’s explore mumps and its impact.
Unlike measles and rubella, mumps does not cause a rash. Instead, it leads to swollen, painful salivary glands (giving kids “chipmunk cheeks”), along with fever, headache, and muscle aches. While most children recover in 1-2 weeks, mumps can sometimes cause serious complications like male infertility and meningitis.
The MMR vaccine is 88% effective at preventing mumps after two doses (lower then the effectiveness for measles and rubella). Measles till remains the most contagious out of the three, due to its ability to remain in the air for up to two hours. After that, mumps is the next most contagious, then rubella.
What to Do If Your Child Shows Symptoms
If your child has a rash, swollen cheeks, or a high fever, contact a doctor.
