Summer Safety Tips

The weather is really warming up and school is officially over! Children really love the summer months because it is the perfect opportunity to spend a lot of time outside!
There are several precautions families must take to staff safe these summer months. A few are highlighted below!
Sun Protection:
A little Vitamin D is a good thing, but too much sun exposure leads to burns and possible cancer.
-Always wear sunscreen, (to be applied 30 minutes prior to exposure)
-Wear protective clothing such as hats, long sleeves (if necessary) and sunglasses too
-Avoid excessive exposure to the sun between peak hours of 10 am – 6 pm
-Take cover under shade when available
Insect Bites:
Bugs will be everywhere shortly. Mosquitos, fleas and ticks, you name it. Think about doing some of these things to prevent unsightly and pain bites or conditions.
-Have a pest control service come and treat your home and year
-Wear repellant
-Treat your pets with preventative meds for flea and tics
-Be observant. Avoid likely areas for bugs, but If playing in wooded areas or tall grasses, be sure to inspect clothing, skin and hair afterwards!
Pedestrian Safety:
Walking is always good exercise. Be sure to be a safe pedestrian though. You can rarely trust drivers these days!
-Use sidewalks when available
-Look both ways before crossing the street
-Make sure children hold the hand of an adult while crossing the street
-Try to make eye contact with drivers to ensure that they see you
-Teach children to practice safety in parking lots and at large, crowded events
Poison Ivy:
Poison Ivy and other conditions including Poison Oak and Sumac are rashes caused by the oils found in particular plants, and can be extremely itchy and uncomfortable.
-Use precaution in highly wooden areas
Consider wearing protective clothing like long sleeved shirts and long pants or tall socks
-Become familiar with what these plants look like
-Avoid direct contact with suspected plants
-Wash hands thoroughly afterward with soap and warm water
