Target Recalls Up & Up Baby Wipes: What Parents Need to Know
As parents, we trust everyday products like baby wipes to help keep our little ones clean and comfortable. That’s why product recalls involving infant care items can be especially concerning.
Target has recalled certain Up & Up Fragrance Free Baby Wipes and Up & Up Fresh Cucumber Scented Baby Wipes after testing identified potential microbial contamination. Here’s what families need to know and what steps to take if you have these products at home.
Why Were the Baby Wipes Recalled?
The recall was issued after customer complaints of product discoloration and FDA testing detected the presence of Burkholderia cepacia complex and Burkholderia gladioli, bacteria that can cause infections in certain individuals. The FDA has classified this as a Class I recall, the agency’s most serious type of recall. A Class I recall means there is a reasonable probability that using the product could cause serious health consequences. While healthy individuals are generally at lower risk, newborns, infants, young children, and people with weakened immune systems are more vulnerable to developing serious infections.
Which Baby Wipes Are Included?
The recall includes select:
- Up & Up Fragrance Free Baby Wipes
- Up & Up Fresh Cucumber Scented Baby Wipes
Products were sold nationwide in Target stores and on Target.com in multiple package sizes. The FDA has a full list with photos of affected products here.
Parents should check:
- Product packaging
- UPC codes
- Manufacturing date codes
- Expiration dates
What Symptoms Should Parents Watch For?
Most children who have used these wipes will not become seriously ill. However, parents should monitor for symptoms that could indicate irritation or infection, including:
- Skin redness or rash
- Persistent skin irritation
- Eye irritation if the wipes came into contact with the eyes
- Swelling or warmth around irritated skin
- Fever
- Unusual fussiness or lethargy in infants
Children with weakened immune systems or underlying medical conditions may be at greater risk for more serious illness.
What Should You Do If Your Child Used the Recalled Wipes?
If your child has used one of the recalled products:
- Stop using the wipes immediately.
- Dispose of them or return them to Target for a refund.
- Monitor your child for any signs of skin irritation or illness.
- Wash the affected skin with mild soap and water if irritation develops.
