According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), in 2023 an estimated 231,700 toy-related injuries were treated in U.S. hospital emergency departments, and about 72% of those injuries involved children age 14 and younger. These statistics highlight why child holiday safety should be a top priority for families. With toy-related injuries still common, parents should stay vigilant to keep little ones safe while they enjoy the season.
Keep an Eye on Toys
While toys often come with recommended age guidelines, children sometimes have access to toys meant for older siblings or family members. Always monitor what items are within reach of your little ones.
Button Batteries and Lithium Coin Batteries
Another important child holiday safety concern involves small, round batteries, which are found not only in toys but also in everyday household items like remotes, watches, and key fobs. These batteries can be extremely dangerous if ingested. When a battery comes into contact with body fluids, it creates a current that produces sodium hydroxide, which can burn a hole in tissue.
If you suspect your child has swallowed a button battery, seek emergency care immediately. Let the doctors know it may be a battery so they can perform the appropriate X-rays.
Other common sources of button batteries at home:
-
Key fobs
-
Thermometers
-
Remote controls
-
Watches
-
Cameras
-
Flameless candles
-
Calculators
-
Small gift items
Watch for Choking Hazards
The holiday season brings bows, ribbons, wrapping paper, and small toy parts—all of which can be choking hazards. Zip ties from toy boxes or small detachable items are especially risky.
Tip: Pre-open and unbox your child’s gifts, remove any small or unsafe parts, and place the toys in gift bags. This way, children can enjoy opening presents safely without unnecessary hazards.
Be Cautious with Holiday Plants
Certain festive plants are poisonous if ingested:
-
Mistletoe berries
-
Holly berries
-
Jerusalem cherry
Keep these out of reach of children. Ingesting these plants can cause vomiting, diarrhea, dehydration, and drowsiness.
If you suspect poisoning from plants, batteries, or other items, contact Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 immediately.
