Why Ear Infections Are So Common in Kids (and What to Do)
If your little one is tugging at their ears, fussy, or having trouble sleeping, they might have an ear infection. Don’t panic, this is one of the most common childhood illnesses – and our kids urgent care for ear infections are here to help!
Why Do Kids Get Ear Infections?
Young children, especially those under 2 years, are more prone to ear infections because their Eustachian tubes (the small passageways that drain fluid from the ears) are shorter and more horizontal, making it easier for fluid to build up. Their developing immune systems and frequent exposure to germs at daycare or school, along with teething or inserting small objects into the ear, can all increase the risk of discomfort and infection.
Signs of an Ear Infection:
- Tugging or rubbing the ears
- Fussiness or increased crying
- Trouble sleeping or eating
- Fever (100.4°F or higher)
- Fluid draining from the ear
- Difficulty hearing
At-Home Relief Tips:
- Use children’s pain relievers like acetaminophen or ibuprofen (if older than 6 months) (ask your healthcare provider for dosing)
- Encourage rest, hydration, and keep your child’s head slightly elevated when lying down
- Ask your provider about over the counter ear drops
When to See a Healthcare Provider
Visit your provider or our kids urgent care for ear infections if your child has:
- A fever over 100.4F
- Ear pain lasting more than 2–3 days
