A Guide to Swimmer’s Ear - Premier Pediatric Urgent Care Provider in Texas - Little Spurs Pediatric Urgent Care

It’s summertime! With your child likely to spend time in a pool, you might wonder how to prevent swimmer’s ear and how it differs from a regular ear infection.

What is Swimmer’s Ear?

Swimmer’s ear, or otitis externa, is essentially a moisture build-up inside the ear. This is typically caused by swimming but can also be caused by showering, improper cleaning of the ear, or a change in humidity. This can lead to infection and irritation of the ear and can be quite painful for children.

Symptoms of Swimmer’s Ear:

  • Itchiness inside the ear
  • Redness and swelling of the ear canal
  • Pain when the outer ear is touched or pulled
  • Drainage of clear or pus-like fluid
  • Decreased or muffled hearing

Diagnosis and Treatment:

  • A doctor will diagnose swimmer’s ear with an otoscope (a device for looking in ears).
  • Prescription ear drops are often prescribed.
  • If the swelling is severe and the drops fall out of the ear, a gauze wick with the drops on it will be inserted in the ear.

Pediatric Urgent Care Prevention Tips:

  • Dry Ears Thoroughly: After swimming or showering, gently dry your child’s ears with a towel. Tilt their head to each side to help water drain out.
  • Use Ear Drops: Consider using over-the-counter ear drops designed to dry out the ear canal. Consult your healthcare provider for recommendations.
  • Keep Ears Clean: Avoid inserting objects like cotton swabs into your child’s ears, as this can push debris further in and irritate the ear canal.
  • Use Earplugs: If your child is prone to swimmer’s ear, use earplugs while swimming to keep water out.
