Holiday Safety Tips

It’s the most wonderful time of the year! While the Holiday Season is full of fun activities  and exciting times for children, it is important to keep their safety top of mind. The last thing we want for your family is to end up in the pediatric urgent care! During this season, we encourage parents everywhere to be mindful of their surroundings and to carefully inspect your home or the homes you are traveling to. Here are some of our suggestions for navigating the holidays safely:

Monitor Christmas Trees

Make sure your tree is secured to the wall and consider installing a baby gate to put around the tree. Always make sure that if your home has an artificial tree, it is labeled as “fire resistant” to properly ensure safety. If you have a real tree in the home, make sure to keep plenty of water in the tree stand.

Keep an Eye on Flames

Don’t leave children unattended in rooms with open flames. Household items such as candles, lighters, and fireplaces are huge hazards to children. And while these winter nights might be perfect to cozy up by the fire, remind children to stay a safe distance from any outdoor fire pits.

Décor Do’s and Don’ts

It is important to keep in mind that while ornaments and tinsel are beautiful decorations for your tree, to young children they are a choking hazard. If you have small children in the home, it may be best to avoid certain festive plants such as poinsettias and mistletoe as they are poisonous if ingested. Keep these away from your child and call Poison Control (1-800-222-1222) if your child eats something they shouldn’t.

Tis the Season for Giving, and Traveling

Brightly wrapped gifts under the tree can be very tempting for children! Consider using empty boxes under the tree to keep presents safe.

Also keep in mind that no matter how safe your own home is for your children, there is a good chance that the relatives’ homes you are traveling to and from this season are not. It is extremely important to always keep a close eye on your children when at other’s homes, especially when they have decorated for the holidays.

Celebrate safely this season! This is an important time of the year to spend with family and friends and it is vitally important to keep your children safe with the hustle and bustle of the season to prevent any holiday hazards from coming their way.  We want you and your family to stay safe this holiday season, which is why we are open 7 days a week.
