Warmer temperatures in Texas are here, and so are seasonal allergies. Texas is well known for seasonal allergy challenges, and managing your child’s allergies this time of year can often be intimidating. However, by taking some proactive measures from our pediatric urgent care you can help navigate your child through allergy season with ease.
Stay Indoors: Dry and windy weather can stir allergies around in the air, helping things like grass and tree pollen travel around much easier. During peak pollen times, it is important to limit outdoor activities, particularly around trees and grass. This can help minimize the symptoms associated with pollen allergies, such as watery eyes and skin rashes. Pollen typically is lower first thing in the morning, so if you want your child to burn off some energy outdoors, do it early!
Clean Up: Encourage your child to practice regular handwashing and bathing, particularly after being outside. Have them change their clothes after playing outside to reduce the pollen they bring into the house. Try to vacuum frequently, and regularly clean common household areas to reduce allergen build-up in the home.
Treat Symptoms: Common allergy symptoms include itchy eyes, scratchy or sore throat, runny nose, and swollen eyes. Treating these symptoms can range from nasal flushes to over-the-counter antihistamines. It is always a good idea to consult with your pediatrician to determine appropriate treatment for your child.
Think Ahead: If your child is sensitive to specific allergens, consider starting allergy medications for them ahead of the peak seasons. Early intervention can help keep the symptoms under control and improve comfort through allergy season.
Seasonal allergies can be challenging, but with proper management and support, your child can continue their everyday life and navigate allergy season with ease.
