It is always a tough call for us parents! Your child has been diagnosed with the flu, impetigo, strep, or some other contagious illness. The big question is: when can they go back?We don’t want our kiddos missing too much school, but we don’t want them to infect other children, or just be miserable all day! So, here are some general guidelines for when a child can go back to school for several common illnesses:

  • Chicken Pox – Until all the lesions have crusted over, or 6 days
  • Common Cold – If they have no fever they can go to school. If they have a fever, wait until they are fever-free for 24 hours
  • Flu – Once they have been fever-free for 24 hours they can return to school
  • Hand Foot and Mouth – Once they have been fever-free for 24 hours they can return to school
  • Head Lice – After treatment has begun
  • Impetigo – 24 hours after starting treatment, as long as the infected area is covered
  • Mono – Once they have been fever-free for 24 hours they can return to school, however they cannot participate in sports for at least a month
  • Pink Eye – After 2 doses of drops in infected eye(s) they can return to school
  • Scabies – After treatment
  • Shingles – They can go as long as the infected area is covered
  • Staph Infection – If they are fever-free and the infected area is covered, they may go to school
  • Strep Throat – If they do are fever-free, they can return to school 12 hours after beginning treatment. If they have a fever, they can return 24 hours after beginning treatment.

Keep in mind, these are very general guidelines! If your child is not feeling well, we recommend taking them to see their pediatrician. Depending on the severity and their pediatrician’s judgment, they might suggest your child stay home longer. When your child does go back to school, make sure their teacher and the school nurse has your contact information.
